Father’s Day is quickly approaching–have you thought about how you want to celebrate this special day? Keep in mind, Father’s Day can include all the father figures in your life, such as husbands, grandpas, brothers, uncles, step-fathers, or anyone you see fit.

This can be a happy day for you to recognize how these figures have impacted you throughout your life. Father’s Day is celebrated all over the world in various ways and recognized as a holiday–just like Mother’s Day–and is always the third Sunday in June, so you still have time to plan. This day is about so much more than just giving something; it's about spending quality time. So instead of a cheesy, cliche gift, here are a few ways to celebrate Father’s Day and to make this year extra special.

9 Ways to Celebrate Father’s Day This Year

Plan a BBQ

A summertime barbecue is always a good idea, especially if you can make it a celebration. Create a menu with your dad’s favorite meats, vegetables, sides, and desserts. The great thing about planning a BBQ for Father’s Day is that you can make it completely your own! You can choose to cook or order takeout to save time, or there is always the option to make it a potluck. Collaborate with other family members, like your mom and siblings, to contribute to the backyard celebration. If space is limited in your home or you don’t have a backyard, you can always cook his favorite meal indoors.

Spa Day for Dad

This might sound crazy...but hear me out. Dads like to feel relaxed, too! Maybe your dad could use a new haircut or it’s even possible that he likes pedicures. Another option could be to reserve a massage for Dad. Either way, find out what kind of “spa day” he might like, and schedule it for him as a creative way to celebrate Father’s Day. If you’re in need of a little spa TLC, too, this can be a spa day for the both of you. If not, fitting in a post-spa meal with Dad will be a perfect way to top the day off!

Go On A Hike

Does your dad like the outdoors? Going on a hike to celebrate Father’s Day can be a memorable (and free!) celebration. It allows you to spend quality one-on-one time with your dad on a beautiful morning hike with a fantastic view. If your dad enjoys walking through nature and being active, this will be an ideal way to spend time with him and an easy go-to option he’s sure to enjoy. Locating a trail nearby can also be easy to find, especially when using resources, such as AllTrails. Once you reach the top, you can open up his favorite beer (or your choice of beverage!) and cheers to a great day and an accomplishment. I’m sure Dad will remember the day as much as you will!

Picnic at the Beach

June is arguably the first summer month that brings in consistently warmer weather (usually!), so why not plan a picnic at the beach with your family to celebrate Father’s Day. Head over to the grocery store to pick up picnic-ready foods or even order food to-go on the way to the warm beach. This is a good idea if your dad and your family enjoy being outside to soak up the sun. Of course, this option works best if the weather is suitable, but enjoying a tasty meal at your local beach or lake could be a fantastic way to create quality time and celebrate Father’s Day!

No beach? Take it to the park!

Go To A Concert

Is your dad a big music fan? Go to a concert this Father’s Day! Buy tickets to one of his favorite bands, music artists, or introduce him to one of your favorites. June has a lot of outdoor concerts, big lineups, and many established artists are doing reunion tours. Take the time to do a little extra research, and this will be a Father’s Day celebration you both can enjoy together. Lastly, why not buy him a memorable band tee before the night ends to tie this memorable evening all together?

Take a Day Trip

Take a mini road trip with your dad to explore a nearby city and maximize the whole day. You can play tourist and explore charming downtown areas, including bookstores, museums, and local restaurants. While you’re at it, why not choose a restaurant with your dad’s favorite cuisine or his favorite dessert? This requires more advanced planning, but once you choose the destination, the activities can easily follow.

Take a Cooking Class Together

Does your dad like to cook? Do you like to cook? This can be a fun and interactive way to celebrate Father’s Day. It is a creative option, especially if you and Dad are not great cooks, since it can create a memorable experience.

Spend some quality time by choosing from a fresh pasta-making class, Indian cuisine, or even sushi. You can start your search on Airbnb, with multiple options to choose from–simply look under the “Experiences” tab to find a class that suits both you and your dad’s interests. If a cooking class isn’t your thing, you can always peruse through different classes or experiences for inspiration.

Cocktail Hour Via Zoom

An easy and fun way to celebrate Father’s Day from afar is to schedule a cocktail hour with your dad over Zoom! Having an online meetup can still be a memorable celebration, especially if you live in different cities or are unable to see each other in person for the holiday. You can even send a bottle of wine on Winc, a cocktail via Cocktail Courier, or use Postmates to send each other beverages; this occasion does not require alcohol. Instead, it’s a fun and festive way to connect with your dad from afar and is perfect if you live far away from your dad or any other important father figures in your life. Say cheers and experience a special Father’s Day “happy hour” with only a few clicks!

Check Something Off Dad’s Bucket List

Of this entire list, this can be the most creative celebration for Father’s Day! You may have to do a little more digging, but you can start by thinking if there is any memory of your dad sharing any stand-out activity that he's always wanted to try. It could be as simple as going to a restaurant he’s always wanted to try or something as adventurous as skydiving. Answering this question always creates a more thoughtful and personal approach to celebrating Father’s Day this year!
