Taylor Swift does it again. The most recent addition to her musical catalogue, Midnights, exploded onto the scene in October 2022 with 184.6 million streams in 24 hours, becoming the highest-streamed album of all time. Not only that, but fans came out en masse to create the highest selling week for vinyl records in the 21st century.
All of Taylor’s albums have a way of making the listener feel nostalgic. It's one of the reasons that the singer's Eras Tour has sold out stadiums and arenas across the globe and whipped fans into a frenzy of friendship bracelets and sequins.
From her newly released re-recording, 1989 (Taylor’s Version), the hit single, “Blank Space,” reminds you of being playful and risky with love. Or the classic, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” from Red (Taylor’s Version) that makes you think of that person that just wasn’t meant for you—maybe for obvious reasons—and realizing the exact moment when you made the decision to break it off.
Whatever heartbreak or rendezvous you’ve been in, Taylor Swift is a lyrical magician that has a way of transporting you to a special moment in time. In celebration of her newest album, the Eras Tour, and her upcoming December birthday, we’ve created a few of our favorite looks that have been inspired by the songs on Midnights.
10 Outfits Inspired By Midnights
These outfits will make you want to step out on your “Vigilante Sh*t” or stay cozy at home with some “Dear Reader” vibes. But guaranteed, there will be an outfit you’ll want to wear or at least inspire you to listen to the album … again.
Anti-Hero
“It’s me, hi. I’m the problem, it’s me.”
Maybe the most popular song on the album, “Anti-Hero,” is also the lead single; it’s catchy, but also relatable in an uncomfortable way. Swift sings about insecurities, anxieties, and parts that we might not like about ourselves. Yet, we still have to find a way to accept them, improve, and even root for ourselves—imperfections and all. The music video has a few standout outfits, but her casual, “That 70s Show” look can be worn any day and any season. Buy a pair of loose brown trousers, a colorful cropped sweater, and some retro-style sneakers. Maybe even get some bangs to complete the whole look.
Lavender Haze
Shop:
Lingerie |
Chiffon Robe |
Earrings |
Perfume |
Candle
“I just want to stay in that lavender haze.”
“Lavender Haze” is the first song on the album and it’s both edgy and alluring, making you want to keep listening to the album—exactly how the first song on an album should be. With the sexy and somewhat seductive tune, a new lavender lingerie set perfectly fits the mood of “Lavender Haze.” Choose a lacy bra and underwear or a silky pajama set in that signature purple shade. Tie the whole look together with a silky robe and set the mood right with your favorite and enticing perfume.
Maroon
Shop:
Cardigan |
Bralette |
Yoga Pants |
Huggie Earrings |
Socks
“The burgundy on my T-shirt when you splashed your wine into me / And how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet, it was (maroon).”
Currently, my favorite song on the album, “Maroon” tells the story of how you can be so in love and already notice its downfall simultaneously. Swift sings, “Carnations you had thought were roses, that’s us.”—seeing a relationship for not exactly what it is. Although the relationship didn’t work out, there are still those simple, yet significant moments that remain crystal clear in your mind.
Just like how Swift shares: “The burgundy on my T-shirt when you splashed your wine into me / And how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet, it was (maroon).” So, this song calls for your favorite glass of red wine, your special someone, along with your comfiest white tee, lounge pants, and your favorite loose cardigan. If you’re looking for a new one, consider the color…maroon.
Paris
Shop:
Turtleneck |
Houndstooth Coat |
Skirt |
Beret |
Chunky Loafers
“I was taken by the view // Like we were in Paris / Like we were somewhere else.”
This song is one of the more poppy and bubbly songs on the album that makes it difficult to not bob your head from left to right. With “Paris,” Taylor Swift reminds us that it’s okay to be a hopeless romantic (once in a while). What would you wear for a romantic evening in Paris? The options are endless, but it’s okay to be a little cliche and create your perfect, romantic Parisian moment, right down to every detail of your outfit. Wear a flowing maxi-skirt, a warm turtleneck, a long wool coat, and leather penny loafers, and don’t forget your beret! Even if you’re not in Paris, you can at least pretend.
Vigilante Sh*t
Shop:
Lace Bodysuit |
Faux Leather Pants |
Boots |
Red Lipstick |
Liquid Eyeliner
“They say looks can kill and I might try / I don’t dress for women / I don’t dress for men/ Lately, I’ve been dressing for revenge.”
“Vigilante Shit” is the song on Midnights that will give you that boost of confidence you didn’t know you needed. There is something about an all-black look that feels rebellious, yet appealing. Wear a leather trench coat with your highest heels or whatever shoes make you feel most confident. Pick your favorite black bottoms and a black bodysuit. Consider a mesh long-sleeved top for a chic and alluring look. Overall, this song is badass, so wear whatever makes you feel your ultra-bad self. And remember to “Draw the cat eye sharp enough to kill a man" to complete the whole Vigilante look.
Bejeweled
Shop:
Crop Top |
Faux Fur Coat |
Glitter Pants |
Heels |
Face Jewels
“Diamonds in my eyes / I polish up real / I polish up real nice.”
Another feel-good song from the album, “Bejeweled” reminds you just how brilliant you already are. For an evening out with your best girls, wear glittery pants, a faux-fur coat, and a simple crop top. On top of that, this song inspires fun and shiny accessories. If you’re up for it, try out white or colored eyeliner with eye jewels for a modern look. This outfit will make you feel ready to show out because … “What’s a girl gonna do? / A diamond’s gotta shiiiine!”
Question…?
Shop:
Sweater Dress |
Faux Leather Coat |
Boots |
Earrings |
Lipstick
“Did you ever have someone kiss you in a crowded room?”
Back to being nostalgic and reminiscent, Swift’s song, “Question…?” is a pop tune about lost love and wondering if the other person is thinking about you, too. This is why this song is so great; it shares feelings that not everyone maybe wants to admit. However, the song is still romantic and makes you wonder: what would you wear if you were being kissed in a crowded room? It calls for something cozy, attractive, and casual. Consider a cable knit sweater, warm tights, and your favorite leather boots. Lastly, a natural-looking lip color that perfectly shapes your lips.
Karma
Shop:
Graphic Tee |
Jeans |
Shacket |
Boots |
Wireless Headphones
“Me and karma vibe like that.”
“Karma” is another song on Midnights that makes you want to bob your head and spread cool girl vibes. So, for a relaxed, yet fashionable look for any day out, pull out your favorite boyfriend jeans, loose-fitting graphic tee, chunky boots, and a loose shacket. Wear your large headphones and listen to this song while strutting down the street with a smile on your face because “Karma’s a relaxing thought / Aren’t you envious that for you it’s not?”
Mastermind
Shop:
Checkered Vest |
Trousers |
Button Down Shirt |
Chunky Loafers |
Claw Clips
“It was all by design / ‘Cause I’m a mastermind.”
“Mastermind” is thoughtful and shares the effort women will put in to getting what they want. As detailed and intricate as this song is, put together an outfit to embody it by stylishly pairing prints and patterns—there is a way to do it without feeling like the outfit is mismatched. Wear an oversized sweater vest, a collared shirt, plaid trousers, and leather loafers. Also, include patterns or prints by adding accessories, such as hair clips and your purse of choice.
Dear Reader
Shop:
Cozy Hoodie |
Cozy Pants |
Boots |
Eyeglasses |
Socks
“Burn all the files, desert all your past lives / And if you don’t recognize yourself / That means you did it right.”
The last song on Midnights is moody, gentle, and calming. It’s a letter to anyone who needs comfort and is not feeling themselves. This song inspires the outfit you wear when you are home alone, reflecting, and more importantly, appreciating who you are and where you are right now. Most likely, this is different for everyone, but the quintessential “Dear Reader” outfit would be a messy bun, glasses, your softest two-piece set, warmest socks .. and your weighted blanket. This song is a reminder to give yourself that same tender loving care you already give to so many people. Thanks for the reminder, T-Swift!
This album may feel like a roller coaster of emotions, but that’s what makes it a fan favorite. Inspired or not, Taylor Swift is a pop queen and an artist, that makes us feel something … and dress a little better, too.
