Why keep a gratitude journal?

It is important to reflect on that which brings joy into your life, and vocalize the ways in which you are blessed. Gratitude brings peace of mind and happiness into your life. If you never acknowledge the things that you are grateful for in life, everything good will pass you by without you even blinking an eye!

A good way to grow your awareness of life’s blessings is through journaling. Journaling jumpstarts internal conversation and self reflection, and you discover a lot about yourself as you write.

It is a great reality check to reflect on things to be thankful for; it reminds you to be positive, no matter any bumps in the road. Below is a list of gratitude prompts to write about in your daily journal!

13 Gratitude Journal Prompts For Your Daily Practice

Prompt #1: Write about something you are proud of in your personal or professional life.

Recall a success and give yourself a huge pat on the back. Work may be crazy, life might be tough sometimes, but no doubt there was a time you overcame a challenge. Write about it!

Prompt #2: When was the last time you laughed until you cried?

Just thinking about it should bring a big smile to your face! Who were you with and what started the funnies?

Prompt #3: Write about one of your best friends that you can always count on and what they have added to your life.

Pick someone who has stuck with you through thick and thin, someone you can always call and has made a huge difference in your happiness. How have they impacted your life, and how have you reciprocated their love?

Prompt #4: Reflect on one of the happiest memories from the past year.

Think of one of the happiest moments in recent memory and what you were most grateful for at that time.

Prompt #5: Reflect on a negative experience that ultimately led to a positive outcome in life.

Remember a time when something bad or unexpected happened and, while it seemed dark at the time, somehow it worked itself out to a positive result. It can help remembering how a situation had seemed hopeless, but with time, your perspective changes and you see how it led to something bigger and better eventually.

Prompt #6: Write about one of your parents and the positive impact they’ve had on you.

What does your mother or father mean to you? Take time to think about the sacrifices they have made for you, and how they express their love for you.

Prompt #7: Describe one aspect of your life that has changed for the better in the past year.

What is something that has changed from a year ago into something great in your life today? Maybe you felt in a dark place a year ago, maybe you were in a toxic relationship, maybe you felt stuck in your career or social life; whatever it is, time brings great change!

Prompt #8: Write about 4 things you are looking forward to.

Make a list of all the things or events that are coming up in the near future. Remembering all the exciting things that have yet to come to be will always bring a positive energy to the day. You have so much to look forward to!

Prompt #9: What was the best part of your day?

Maybe it was a person, maybe you had a great workout, maybe there was an amazing rainbow this morning! The little moments can fly by without us even noticing if we don’t take time to treasure them.

Prompt #10: Write a thank-you to someone special.

You could choose either a random act of kindness or someone who has consistently been there for you. Choose someone who deserves a great deal of gratitude from you, write about it, and maybe, if you’re feeling brave, share those sentiments with them.

Prompt #11: Reflect on one of your role models.

Who inspires you? What qualities do they possess that you admire and aspire to? How have you worked to live up to them?

Prompt #12: Write about one of your favorite pastimes.

What is a hobby that has added a great deal to your happiness? How has it changed you and what does it mean to you?

Prompt #13: Describe ten things about yourself that you like.

Love yourself! What are things about yourself that you feel most people don’t have? You are unique and it is healthy to celebrate what makes you you!
